CSAs and Farms in Metrowest Massachusetts
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. They are local farms where local families can get locally grown produce, like fruits and vegetables. In some cases, you can get dairy like milk, cheese and eggs, or meats and flowers.
Many CSAs in Metrowest MA have vegetable shares, where families buy a share into the output of product on the farm. They can be small shares or large shares based on a calculation by the farm in how much food will be produced by the farm during the season. The larger the farm, the more families (or shares) can participate and be offered. Some CSAs have meat, dairy, bread and/or fruit shares too.
Larger shares are great for families that are large, or share with other families, the fruits and vegetables they get. Or if the family likes to can, jar or make things from the produce. Small shares are great for families that are couples, or small families, or just want a little bit of veggies and fruit to supplement their grocery list every week.
Each CSA is different so look into each to determine the farm's practices and what types of shares they offer to see which is the best option for your family. Note that some CSAs have waiting lists so it may take some time to become part of the farm community. So it is best to reach out in early winter to get on a list. However, always check the websites as spots do open up.
