Four Things to Do During December Vacation in Massachusetts

Toys should keep kids entertained and occupied during the holiday vacation. Yet, we all know that does not happen! Cabin fever can set in! So take a break, get out of the house, and prolong the holiday spirit. These are classic New England activities to do before school starts in the new year!

Edaville Railroad (Carver, MA)

The Festival of Lights is a sight to see. While the attractions can entice kids, there is something magical when riding through the lights and holiday music. About an hour from Boston, the trip is manageable from Metrowest, MA. Food available on site, but McDonalds and Dunkin' Donuts are accessible on Rt 58 towards Rt 44. Another good family option is the Little Red Smokehouse on Rt 58 towards Rt 24. Check their Facebook page and website for discounts, as they are always offering special deals.

Enchanted Village (Avon, MA)

The Enchanted Village at Jordan's Furniture in Avon, MA is a trip back in time. Whether you remember experiencing it as a kid or enjoy the nostagia from the scenes depicted in the village, kids like the magic (and the falling snow.) The admission price to the Enchanted Village is $0. While they offer food and beverages for purchase, and even photo opps for Santa, you don't have to buy. Just plan accordingly. You are allowed to bring in outside food. It takes about 30 minutes to go through the village – though longer during peak seasons due to crowds. You can buy tickets for the Polar Express 4D or the Light Show as add on options that do cost money. (I suggest buying them first so you get the showing you want.) Those two shows are around $6 for each, at the time of this post.

Broadway in Boston (Boston, MA)

Enjoy The Nutcracker, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and other holiday offerings at the various theaters in Boston. Tickets can range in value, but they are a fun trip in town to see theater at its finest during the holiday season. Use Open Table to book reservations for local eateries to make a day of it and avoid wait times. Also check out the Boston Mayor's Holiday for discounted deals too.

Ice Skating (Various)

Enjoy skating on ice during the holiday break. While I used to skate on local ponds as a kid during my school vacations, things are better when it is an official (and safer skating) rink. There is the Frog Pond in Boston, as well as Boston Winter at Government Center. Locally, check out the Babson Skating Rink in Wellesley/Needham or the William Chase Arena in Natick. They often have open skate hours and skates for rent as well. Grab some hot cocoa on the way home.
